Guns ‘n’ Roses vocalist Axl Rose.  You know what?  If you are not a fan of his vocals, then just listen to this acapella version of Welcome to the Jungle.

Top 100 rock vocalists : 7 Bon Scott

7.  Bon Scott (AC/DC)

Now, considering DC are my all time favourite band, many of you may have thought Scott would have been #1.  I wouldn’t be that predictable now would I?

Now as much as Scott was pure entertainment on a stage, he certainly isn’t the greatest.  However, Scott would captivate his audience with his sexual innuendo’s, tight jeans, hairy chest and a cheeky smile….hang on, he was a rock singer – so was this for the girls or boys?  Who cares…

He wrote many a song on early DC albums Highway to Hell, TNT, Powerage, Let there be rock and Dirty Deeds, and when Scott sadly passed away in February 1980, many thought that was the end of AC/DC as was the legacy he left.  However, he would have wanted the band to continue, and promptly appointed Brian Johnson from relatively unknown band Geordie.  Before you could blink their best ever selling album Back in Black was released as a tribute the great man and soon became the second biggest selling album of all time.

Top 100 rock vocalists : 8 Rod Stewart

8.  Rod Stewart (solo, Faces)

Surprised?  I hope not, because when I mention Rod Stewart  I am talking about the early, no holds barred singer with the Faces (and a certain Jimmy Page) and his earlier stuff.  His classic American songbook can go and do one, but the rock and roll songs of the late 60’s / early 70’s were great.  Albums such as Smiler, Atlantic Crossing and Never a Dull Moment  were his finest work to date along with Faces’ First Step.

Top 100 rock vocalists : 9 Bruce Dickinson

9.  Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
This guy’s voice is just incredible.  If you are not too familiar with the name then shame on you – he was / is the lead singer of heavy metal, er, heavyweights, Iron Maiden.  What I really like about Dickinson is his need to piss people off, he is a pure unadulterated rebel.  He will defy anyone to get his point across (remember the episode with Cliff Richard?).  And then there was the whole shenanigans of the Bring your daughter to the slaughter single.

Bruce Dickinson is everything that rock and roll should be.

Top 100 rock vocalists : 10 Elvis Presley

11.  Elvis Presley

We are into the top 10, and who better to kick it off than the king of rock ‘n’ roll?  Apparently, you were either a Beatles fan or an Elvis fan – is it wrong to be a self-confessed fan of them both?  Tough – I am.

Elvis had absolutely everything.  He most certainly had the looks (apparently..?!?!), he could sing, dance and had stage presence.  Now granted, I am just going by old footage and his legacy here, but I don’t think many would argue….

Top 100 rock vocalists : 12 Kelly Jones

12.  Kelly Jones

Do I really think Kelly Jones is that good?  Absolutely.  Am I biased because he is Welsh?  Possibly, but I don’t think so.  He probably has the most distinctive, instantly recognizable voice of the last 20 years.  His croaky, yet utterly mesmerizing vocals take you on a journey, no, on HIS journey, and you are with him all the way through each and every album.  Tracks to check out – I stopped to fill my car up, Just Looking, Since I told you it’s over and Dakota.
